Talk Factory is a simple online tool and related apps which support learning by helping students understand how to engage in productive, supportive discussion in primary and secondary schools. It helps to develop an inclusive classroom where ideas can be explored as described in the English National Curriculum (2014):

Pupils should be taught to speak clearly and convey ideas confidently using standard English. They should learn to justify ideas with reasons; ask questions to check understanding; develop vocabulary and build knowledge; negotiate; evaluate and build on the ideas of others, and select the appropriate register for effective communication."

We suggest pupils first are helped to understand why it is helpful to have a set of rules to support productive discussion and then their discussion can be coded to evaluate their success. An interactive whiteboard can support whole class discussion, laptops and tablets can support group work.
